Free-banking revisited: the Chilean experience 1860-1898

چکیده
During a large part of the second half of the 19 century Chile had a free-banking system, which allowed virtually any banking institution to issue money without major restrictions other than some minimum capital requirements. Because of its closeness to the pure theoretical model of free-banking as well as for its duration (almost 40 years), the Chilean experience offers precious insights to empirically test the implications of the pure theoretical model as well as increase our knowledge about the functioning of free-banking in practice.
